Michigan Extortion Laws
MCLA 750.213: Malicious Threats to Extort
This statute covers oral or written communications that maliciously threaten to accuse another of a crime, or threaten injury to a person or their family, with the intent to extort money or compel an act against their will.
Penalty: Felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
MCLA 750.214: Extortion by Public Officers
Applies to public officials who willfully and corruptly demand or receive fees greater than allowed by law for official duties.
Penalty: Misdemeanor (must be commenced within 1 year of the offense).
